An Epic Encounter.

The skiff race at the Blakeney Regatta on Saturday 28th August will live long in the memory. It was an absolutely epic encounter between two very competitive crews.

Bluejacket Crew: Clive, Humphrey, Robin, Nigel, Jeni.

Hoi Larntan Crew: Andrew, Tom, Charlotte, Catherine, Elaine.

Many thanks to Andrew Riley and Humphrey Borgnis for contributing to the following account and to Helen for the pictures of the skiffs in the Cut. Thanks also to Diana Howes for the action pictures.

“This was a hard-fought, closely contested race,” writes Andrew, “with clashes of oars at various points including at the turn at Buoy 11.” Hoi Larntan, coxed by Elaine, led the whole way but Bluejacket, coxed by Humphrey, was never far behind. The excitement was intense as Bluejacket edged into the lead a few lengths before the finish line at Lapwing. It was great fun in conditions which were somewhat rough and windy.

Humphrey collected a beautiful 1930s cup from BSC after the race. Some club silverware to display! Andrew writes, “Congratulations to Bluejacket and well rowed by all.”

Humphrey continues, “A very competitive race in tricky conditions that could have gone either way. Many thanks to all who rowed and to BSC for providing The Worsley Cup for the club.”
